Seven Touchdown Passes in one game

Sullivan East Patriots (Varsity) - 1972 Season
Posted Monday, December 28, 2009 by Lonnie Blevins
In 1972 season we played Central away, I remember the game very well. How could I forget something like that night.  First of all I was not feeling very well, I had flu like symptoms all day before the game. But that was not going to stop me from playing in this game because during those years besides Tennessee High, Central was one of our biggest rivals.
We trailed early in the game and then things kind of broke loose you might say.  It seemed like everytime we decided to throw it turned out to be a touchdown pass.  I had all kinds of time thanks to the offensive line and almost everyone of the recievers were wide open.  I merely had to play catch with them and the next thing we knew we were leading 55-19 and I had thrown 7 touchdown passes. Three to Tony Adams, three to Marvin Gurley and one to Charlie Wells. The amazing thing about it was is that Coach Blevins took us out before the end of the 3rd quarter.  Who knows what it might have been had he left the starters in for that one.
I won't say that this record will never be broken but it has stood for over 37 years now and I doubt that it will be broken in my lifetime.
The sad part for me is that it seems no one at Sullivan East High today would be able to tell you about this because nowhere is this posted in any of the records or no photos on the wall of anyone from that team. As a leader on that team I will say this, there may have been some teams at East with better records but I still believe that this was the best team East has ever put on the field.  Our only problem was that there was a national champion 5 miles up the road at THS and Dobynns Bennet and Elizabethton were both ranked in the top ten of the state that year.  You know if you take away DB, Elizabethton, Maryville that we played and let us play Happy Valley, Johnson County, and Unaka, or Hampton we would have just as Easily been 9-1 with the record thing....
But we weren't and I am still proud of the team with the best record at East, proud of Ralph and what he has done for the program.
